Density is the degree of compaction in a population; the degree of proximity between people: the closeness of persons living on a given surface, the spatial balance of their social and economic assets.

On the basis of degree of population density, the world can be divided into the following density zone:
(a) Areas of very dense population (over 100 people per km2). Regions of high living standards: England, Germany, northeast USA. Regions of low living standards: Southeast Asia, India.

(b) Areas of moderate population density (25-100 people per km2).
Regions of high living standards: France, southeast Australia, southeast Canada, Mid-west USA. Regions of low living standards: Turkey, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Ecuador.
(c) Areas of low population density (below 25 people per km2).
Regions of high living standards: Sweden, Norway, New Zealand, western Canada. Regions of low living standards: northern Africa, central Brazil, Patagonia, New Guinea.
