Hegel is an advocate of ethics of self-realization. He interprets the maxim in the following way. Mediaeval Christianity put an ascetic inter pretation upon the maxim. The crucification of the flesh is necessary for the resurrection of the spirit. Hegel does not interpret the maxim for the stand point of criticism.
According to him to means that the self must die as narrow, private individual and like the richer and wider life of the spiritual universe beyond them. He does not advocate the extirpation of sensibility for the higher life of the self but regulation of it by reason and transformation of it into an expression of the higher life of reason. The way to self-realization is through self-abnegation.
