My dear Name,
You will be glad to hear that I paid a visit to Puri and Bhubaneswar during the last Easter holidays. It was the dream of my life to see the sea. So when an opportunity came, I readily seized upon it. We were six students. We got concession tickets. Our seats were reserved in second class sleeping coach, so in spite of great rush of passengers we did not feel any inconvenience. We started by puri express train at night. It stopped only at a few big stations. At about nine in the following morning we reached Puri.
We put up in the Puri Hotel. It is on the first line of the beach. I cannot adequately give vent to my feeling of joy and wonder which I felt when I saw vast blue expanse of water with the rolling waves. The high waves rolled and broke down on the shore with a roaring sound. Our room in the hotel commanded a beautiful view of the sea and I fully enjoy the view. Great was my excitement when I had a bath in the sea for the first time in my life.
In the afternoon we had a pleasant stroll along the beach. We gathered some beautiful oyster shells following the examples of others. All night the sea roared, but it did not disturb our sleep. Next morning we again took a walk along the beach. The sky was very clear. We had the food luck to see the sunrise. The scene of the sun coming out of the sea can not be fully described. One can only drink its beauty to one’s heart‘s content.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
Besides the beauty of the sea, there is another attraction in Puri. It is the famous temple of Jagannath. We visited this historic temple. It is perhaps the largest temple in the whole of India. We saw inside the temple the images of Jagannath, Balaram and Suvadra. Puri is a town of temples. I have never heard of any other town expect Varanasi with so many temples. We visited many of them.
We had a mind to visit the temples at Bhubaneswar and to climb the hillocks, Khandagiri and Udaygiri. We hired a station wagon for the purpose. Our station wagon passed through the new town of Bhubaneswar, the new capital of Orissa. We climbed both Udaygiri and Khandagiri and saw the caves where the Jain and Buddhist monks spent their time in deep meditation more than two thousand years ago
We saw the Jain temple on the top of Khandagiri . We then visited the temple of Lingaraj at Bhubaneswar. Its beauty and architectural skill can not but draw the administration of all visitors. We returned to Puri in the evening. Next day we reserved our seats again in the Puri Express train and reached Kolkata the following morning.
If you get any opportunity, you should once visit Puri and Bhubaneswar.
