Impact of social and religious reforms movement on Indian’s awakening. The soil for the growth of Indian nationalism and political awakening was prepared by the socio-religious reform movements of the 19th century. Among them the names of the Brahmo Samaj, the Arya Samaj, the Ram Krishan Mission and the Theosophical Society may be prominently mentioned. Raja Rammohan Roy the founder of Brahmo Samaj, is called the Prophet of Indian nationalism. On account of these movements Indians began to realize the evils of the subjection. Swami Dayanand, Swami Vivekanand, Ishwar Chandra Vidya Sagar and R.N.Tagore started movements for religious and social reformation, which roused the nation and created a spirit of self-reliance and determination to change the most deplorable conditions prevailing under foreign rule. They gave a new life and a new spirit to the people of India.
All the religious and social reformers had done a lot of work in the field of education. Raja Rammohan Roy, Swami Dayanand, Ishwar Chandra Vidya Sagar and Sir Sayeed Ahmad Khan opened many colleges and schools for sake of Indian masses. They laid emphasis on political social, economical and religious liberty and fundamental rights. In this way, the above account gives an impression that social and religious reformers contributed to our nationalism and awakening.
