‘Manners maketh man’, is a very true-saying. By manners we mean proper and respectful behavior towards all with whom we come in contact. Good manners are the signs of good upbringing. They are the signs of culture and lend grace to our personality.
Good manners are very necessary for civilized life. It is with them that we win the favor and confidence of other. They are a sure passport for success in life. An ill-mannered person is disliked everywhere.
Good manners endear us to others. A polite answer and a kind word uttered? in time can save us from many troubles. It is civility shown to others which succeeds while talents fail. Even a good action followed by contemptuous remark loses all its merit. A rebuke, if politely made, does not offend.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
Good manners depend on man’s upbringing. A child born in a cultured family will learn how to be respectful to others. He will not need to be told that he has to be polite to others. Words kindly spoken by his elders are bound to have their effect on him. Contrary to this, a child born in an uncultured family will be rude and disrespectful because he sees his elders behaving like that. A child will learn whatever he is taught.

Man is a social being. He should always look to the convenience of others. Good manners demand that when he is in company he should not monopolize the conversation. He should allow others to have their say. Moreover, he should neither speak so loud that his voice becomes jarring to the ears nor he should whisper so low that he is not even audible to his companions. It is bad manners to go on talking when others are unwilling to listen.
A man should be polite while talking to strangers. This will help him turn even his enemies into friends. On the other hand a foul tongue may even make us lose our best friends. “Live and let others live”, should be our motto.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
Good manners demand that a man should behave decently in his day-to-day contact with people. While travelling he should observe the rules of the road. He should be courteous, particularly towards old men and ladies. Kindness shown to them will not cost him much but it will buy their good opinion. While boarding a bus or a train he should see that he does not push his way in but takes his turn. It is bad manners to break the queue or to push oneself in out of turn.
