Crossed cheques are those, the payment of which are not made over the counter. These cheques are collected by the bank of the depositor. After collecting the cheque, the bank credits the customer’s account deducting collection charges, if any. There are two types of crossing. (i) general crossing; and (ii) special crossing. In general crossing two transverse parallel lines are drawn across the face of the cheque with or without the words ‘& Co.’, ‘Not Negotiable’ etc. but not including the name of a bank. In case of special crossing two transverse parallel lines are drawn across the face of the cheque with the name of bank. In case of special crossing, the drawee bank shall pay the amount only to the bank mentioned in the crossing.
