Birth:
Rabindranath Tagore was born in a rich family of Bengal. When he was a small boy, he was not sent to school.
Education:
A teacher taught him at home in Calcutta. He was not much interested in reading. He was sent to school also for some time but he did not learn much there. He did not like books. He was very much interested in drama, music, poetry and art. He began to write poems and short stories at the age of sixteen. He wrote fine things.
His father sent him to England for his further studies. He joined the university college, London and remained there for some time. But he returned back without passing any examination. He did not get any degree.

Now he became a famous poet. He wrote many dramas, novels, short stories and poems. He became known as one of the greatest poets of Bengal. His greatest and most famous poem was ‘Gitanjali’. He translated the Gitanjali in English. This grand poem has now been translated in many languages of different countries. The poem made Tagore well known in the whole world.
His Fame:
Rabindranath Tagore was awarded Noble Prize for literature. He was the first Indian to get this prize. He became very famous now. The University of Calcutta gave him the degree of Doctor of Letters. He was also given the title of ‘Sir’ by the British Government.
His Tours:
He now traveled through Europe, America, China and Japan. Wherever he went, he was given a warm reception. People spoke highly of his learning. He was honored and admired for his extraordinary literary genius and fine speeches.
Started an Institution:
In 1901, he opened his famous school at a small village, named Bolpur. This school is very famous in the world. It has no grand building. This school is an open air school. The students live among natural objects and scenery. Students come from all parts of the world to receive education there. They are taught reading, writing, art, music, dancing and singing. It is a matter of great pride that our Late Prime Minster, Smt. Indira Gandhi who was the Mother of the Nation read in this institution. This open air school is of its own kind in the world. We can never forget the immortal name of this great poet, writer and philosopher so long as this school remains in existence.

Rabindranath Tagore was a great genius. He was a sage and looked like a sage. He wore long hair and a long beard. He had many disciples and was called Guru Deo. He was a great poet and social reform. He added to the dignity of India. India is proud of him. We can never forget such a sage, a poet writer and a philosopher.
