Though time lasts but tough people don’t. Amitabh Bachchan is one such person who faced many ups and downs in his life. In the beginning of his career in the film industry he struggled to get a good role due to his height and unconventional voice. But with his determination, he established himself as an actor. However, when he had reached to a superstar status he met a major accident in the film sets of Coolie. That accident had almost cost his life but destiny had something other in the store.
He started his re-birth with extra vigour and gave many superhit movies. He essayed many award-winning performances, for Agnipath he also received a National Award for acting.
Amitabh Bachchan was born in Allahabad on October 11, 1942. His father, Harivansh Rai, one of the most popular Hindi poets, was himself a legend by then. His father a strict disciplinarian, with an open mind and strong temper, he inspired Amitabh a lot and helped him to take his decisions on his own.

His mother was Sikh from Karachi, Pakistan (the then Punjab) and was strong in her values and in her beliefs. In a way he got lovely blend of these cultures, which can be easily seen, in Amitabh’s attitude and aura. His early schooling began in Allahabad and then he was sent to the prestigious boarding school in Nainital, Sherwood College. He had a great aptitude for the sciences and he thought of becoming a full-fledge scientist. Then there was drama at school, and the best actor’s trophies, which fired this young and energetic youth’s imagination. Later on he moved to Kirori Mal College, Delhi University for his Bachelors. It was here when he actively got into acting. He took part in kirori Mal’s active theatre society known as ‘The Players’ which allowed Amitabh to further sharpen his acting skills. Harivansh Rai, by then a senior Hindi literature, formed a theatre group comprising his own family members. He began producing Hindi blank verse translations of Shakespeare at the Little Theatre Gallery in New Delhi. Amitabh was notice in the performances but in limited circles.
Then Amitabh packed up his bags and went straight to Kolkata show his talent. Amitabh got his first job in the Black Bird Company as an executive. But the executive job couldn’t long satisfy him and he became more and more restless with each passing day. His desire of making big in film keeps bickering him continuously. So finally, after a few years, he told his parents that he wished to shift to Mumbai to work in films.
He first appeared in Saat Hindustani but the film sank without making any impact. Then followed months of struggle ironically, known for his rich voice, he was rejected by the All India Radio. After some more flops, he even played villain to Navin Nischol’s hero in Parwana. Then happened Zanzeer which changed the course of his life. It was this film which given Amitabh the image of ‘The Angry Young Man’ with which the youth of India Identified easily. Amitabh change the intense young man of seventies into the complete entertainer of the eighties. The two finest commercial movies in Indian cine history, Sholay and Deewar, were both released in 1975. It was this year only that Amitabh’s superstardom was introduced. Amitabh broke a thousand hearts when he married the famous Guddi girl, Jay Bhaduri on June 3, 1973. Amitabh also tried his luck in politics in the year 1987 but his love for politics did not last long. He also spent sometime in the small screen and produced quintessential of Amitabh Bachchan, his quiz programme Kaun Banega Crorepati became a smash hit. At the turn of the century, he was placed in the group of such fine actors as Charlie Chaplin, Marlon Brando and Sir Lawrence Oliver by being declared as ‘The Actor of the Millennium’ by the BBC News Poll. Besides that he became the first Asian actor whose wax model is displayed at Mademe Tussaud’s Museum of Wax Models in London, UK.
Nobody else ever had this deadly combination of unmatched talent and charisma and nobody else will ever have it in future. Then there was style, polish and a great deal of seclusion encouraging rumours and augmenting the aura. Anyway one looked at it, the man radiates power. To recapitulate there has only been one super star in India, and that is Amitabh Bachchan.
