Girls have bagged the top three ranks in the Civil Services Examination 2009 with Shubhra Saxena of Indirapuram (Ghaziabad) topping the test, results for which were declared on May 4. While Sharandeep Kaur Brar has been placed second, Kiran Kaushal secured the third position.The top 25 candidates included 10 women and 15 men.

While 12 of them are from Commerce, Management, Humanities, Science and Social Sciences, nine candidates are from streams of Engineering and four from Medical Sciences.

A total number of 3,18,843 candidates applied for the examination, while 1,67,035 appeared for the Preliminary Examination. Of them 11,849 qualified for the Mains held in October-November 2008 but only 2,140 could make it to the Personality test conducted in March-April 2009.The successful candidates include 625 male and 166 female candidates.
Miss Shubhra Saxena (Roll No.159306), who topped the examination, did B.Tech from IIT, Roorkee. This was her second attempt. The second ranker is Miss Sharandeep Kaur Brar (Roll No.307085). She has done M.A. from Punjab University.Twenty-six years’ old Sharandeep Kaur Brar is undergoing training in Shimla for the Indian Audit and Account Services. Her subjects in the Mains were Psychology and Sociology.
Mr. Varinder Kumar Sharma (Roll No. 170034), is the topper among male candidates. He secured overall fourth rank. He has done B.E. from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh and this was his first attempt. Incidentally, Sharma is physically challenged candidate.Sharma, an electrical engineer, was the only candidate in the top 25 to take the exam in Punjabi. Aditi Singh, an alumnus of Lady Shriram College, Delhi University, secured the 12th rank in the Mains. After doing her graduation, post graduation and M.Phil in Political Science, Aditi was successful in the Mains in the third attempt.Ms. Karuna Madan, Sr. Journalist, interviewed the topper Shubhra Saxena on behalf of Bright Group of Publications.
