Once you have choose a career in Civil Service you should be prepared to toil consistently for a minimum of two years and also prepare yourself for more, if necessary. As far as the Civil Services Exam, is concerned, there are no good Optionals and bad Optionals nor are there high scoring or low scoring Optionals. It is a level playing fields for every Optionals, provided you have a genuine interest in it and availability of quality coaching in an added advantage, provided you put in he required hard work.

You need to be very careful while choosing optional subjects but once you choose them, you should, as far as possible, stick to it. Frequent change of Optionals would only make confusions more confounded.

Unlike other examinations, in the Civil Services Exam, the role of the student in paramount. Coaching institutes can only guide but all the hard work is left to the student. There are times when one might feel downcast and short of confidence. One should follow the trend of questioning for Prelims and Mains and go through the past few year’s question papers. One should be positive and optimistic as far as solutions to different problems are concerned. It will in turn reflect in one’s answers and create a good impression upon the evaluator.

Writing Practice is a must for Main Examination and good quality of the language would add flavor to it.
8. Communication Skills
As for the preparation of the personality test, one should keep in mind that one can’t improve one’s communication skills overnight. It is a long term process. One can only fine-tune it . One should try to be oneself as far as possible. One doesn’t lose marks for saying ‘I don’t know’, though not for every question. The Board will appreciate one’s sincerity. Also, one should never bluff or self-contradict and don’t argue irrationally and always have a balanced option about every questions.
