Different people have different ambitions. Some want to be rich. Some wish to become leaders of men. Some desire to be scientist. There are others who make their mark by doing something outstanding or extraordinary. It was this spirit of adventure that made men and women swim across the English channel and explorers to risk their lives in the South Pole. And in more recent times it was this very spirit which made man perform the miraculous eat of landing on the moon. Indeed it is a law of human nature that everyone, rich or poor, young or old wishes to outshine others in his sphere of activity. And since I am a human being, I too have my own ambition.
My ambition in life is not wealth, power or high social status. I am too modest to aim at any of these things. My ambition is modest. It is to serve the ailing and the sick. With this object in view I have taken up science subjects—physics, chemistry and biology in my Senior School Certificate Examination. After passing my Senior School Certificate Examination I shall appear in the test for Medical Colleges and I am sure I shall succeed and join a Medical College. I know that I must obtain a good First Division in the examination or else it will not be possible for me to join any medical college. That is why I am working very hard.
After I have passed the M.B.B.S. examination I shall set up my own practice. I shall be a good doctor, not the type of doctors we usually come across. They fleece their patients and do very little to help them. God forbid, I shall never do like this. It will be my mission to serve and serve only and not to expect ay undue reward for my labour. I shall go to the extent of treating the poor free. I shall charge fee from the rich so that I might not find myself in difficulty. If at all I earn, it will be to help the poor—my suffering brethren. This is the goal I have set for myself, I know it is not something easy. I shall have to forego many of the luxuries for which man works in life. I cannot hope to live in fine bungalows or enjoy the comforts of modern life. I am too simple a man to aim at any of these things. Service of the poor is my aim and I am sure God will help me achieve this end.
