In India, the joint family system has been in existence since ancient times. In a joint family, the father is the head of the family which constitutes of his wife, songs, daughters-in-law and grandchildren. He has a say in all the matters. The sons follow the family occupation. In search of job and better opportunities, people started migrating to towns and cities. The overcrowded and congested living conditions, lack of space and high cost of living in the cities have birth to the nuclear family system. This small family system has both its advantages and disadvantages. But the elderly section should not be ignored. They can guide the young. They are an asset to the society. But again it is upto the new generation to decide.
