Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902) was a social reformer and a spiritual leader. He worked to eliminate child mirage and to spread education among women and lower castes. He was the first person who boldly proclaimed the superiority of the Hindu culture, civilization and heritage. Vivekananda represented Hinduism at the World’s Parliament of Religions at Chicago in 1893. he was an activating force behind the Vedanta Movement in England and the United States of America. He established a Vedanta institution in San Francisco, USA. In 1857, Ramakrishna Mission was founded by him. Self-perfection of a person and service for the benefit of mankind were his main ideals. His birth anniversary is celebrated as the National Youth day in India.
